Spring Institute
The 2023 Spring Institute will take place April 28-29 at the Hilton Garden Inn Des Moines/Urbandale.

Friday, April 28: 10:00 a.m. – 4:15 p.m.
Registration opens at 9:15 a.m.
Speaker: Kim Hughes
Kim Hughes will guide us in exploring Conscious Discipline®, a comprehensive self-regulation program and a social and emotional curriculum based on current brain research, child development information, and developmentally appropriate practices. We will explore evidence-based strategies that create an emotionally/physically safe school environment, as well as techniques to remain calm in the moments of chaos. Together, we’ll discover how Conscious Discipline® empowers teachers to impact children’s behavior.
Saturday, April 29: 9:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.

Speaker: Kristen RB Peterson
Kristen RB Peterson will teach us that even though saying YES to children is harder than saying NO, saying NO can take away valuable learning experiences. She’ll help us see how developmentally appropriate practice (when fully understood) can help you get to the bottom of the “naughty behaviors” and how saying YES to children will meet their needs in a way that you can both be satisfied.
Training Credit
5.0 credit hours of HHS and NAC renewal credit will be available each day. If you are a participant in the HHS Child Care Training Registry, Iowa AEYC will process your enrollment when you enroll on i-PoWeR. Click here to enroll on i-PoWeR.

Membership Discounts
If you are a member of the Iowa AEYC, you’ll receive a discount to our Institutes! (If you’re not a member, but want to become one, click here. Hint: you’ll pay less for the cost of membership fees plus the membership rate for both days than you’ll pay for the cost of both days as a non-member.)
To access your discounted member registration rate, follow these steps on our Eventbrite registration page:
- Click the orange Reserve a spot button on the right-hand side.
- Click Enter promo code (in blue, above the ticket options).
- Type in the email address associated with your membership. The email account associated with your membership is your code.
- Click Apply. This will unlock your member rates.
Hotel Information
If you’re traveling from out of town, we have a block of rooms reserved at the hotel for Spring Institute attendees! Click here to book a discounted hotel room. Note: you must book your room(s) no later than April 6 for the discounted rate. First come, first served.
Cancellation Policy
If, for any reason, you must cancel your registration for the Spring Institute, a full refund will be made if cancellation notice is received by Monday, April 24th at 5:00 p.m. After April 24th, all registered attendees must pay the registration fee.
